The first and most important element of a good golf swing is the setup. Your brain knows where the target is, if you are improperly aligned, it will be difficult for your body to react to the target. A bad setup causes manipulation during the swing, resulting in poor technique and ultimately more strokes. Make sure your body is parallel down the target line. Lay down some clubs side by side if you are having trouble getting parallel, this will help you visually.
Second, the take away, which starts with good technique. This takes some practice; get in a golf stance and take a volleyball or an upside down ball basket. Hold the ball or basket with your hands on each side at hip height. Pass the ball or basket to an imaginary person on your right. This will help you start your swing on plane. You will know you are too far inside or outside the path, if your hands are not parallel to your hips at hip height (i.e. in front or behind your hips).
Third, throwing the club head at the target (not literally - maintain possession of the club). This helps with impact - every Professional golfer does the same thing at impact. By throwing the club down the target line, you are letting the ball get in the way of the swing. Trying to hit the ball instead of letting the ball get in the way causes improper contact. Practice without a ball and just throw your club head at the target so you get the feel of this. This will also help your club head speed, because you are not stopping after you hit the ball. You are throwing the club head at the target.
